The Case Study of Bruce Wayne (class assignment)

 Bruce Wayne from ‘Batman Begins’

Presenting Problems

Bruce Wayne is dealing with PTSD, repressed anger, and the trauma that stems from the experience of seeing his parents get murdered in front of him as an adolescent by a man named Joe Chill. He is also dealing with the PTSD, phobia of bats, and trauma that came from falling into a pit of bats while playing with his childhood friend Rachel Dawes near the top of an old well. Bruce manifests these thoughts and emotions at first through the homicidal ideation of murdering Joe Chill, but while he is on trial an associate of the mafia crime boss Carmine Falcone is able to murder him first as he is exiting the court room. Due to not being able to fulfill his murder fantasy, Bruce Wayne’s homicidal ideation develops into violence and vigilantism after he trains with the League of Shadows a secret society that offers Bruce temporary purpose and guidance through the controversial leader Ra’s Al Ghul. Bruce renounces homicide as a method of coping with his trauma after being offered to do so by Ra’s as an initiation into the LOS organization. Bruce’s phobia of bats also develops into a fear tactic that he uses to intimidate criminals into fear of himself, thus attempting to become the very phobia unto criminals, that brought distress to himself as an adolescent.

Predisposing Problems

As said above, as an adolescent Bruce Wayne experienced a major trauma when his both of his parents were murdered in front of him in an attempted robbery. Before this trauma, Bruce experienced a secure attachment with both his parents particularly of his father Thomas Wayne as one of Bruce’s positive core memories is of his father ‘saving him’ from the bat cave that he fell into while he was an adolescent. His father Thomas Wayne was also a doctor, and another positive core memory Bruce has of his father is him using a stethoscope on Bruce’s heart as they both connect and smile at each other. Bruce’s parents are also billionaires, and Bruce was raised amongst a large amount of wealth as he inherits the company Wayne Enterprises as an adult as he is their sole heir. Bruce Wayne is Caucasian and American and lives in Gotham City, which is based in New Jersey.

Precipitating Factor

Bruce Wayne’s main crisis is using the coping mechanism of posing as a masked vigilante during nighttime settings and imposing violence upon criminals in Gotham city as a response to the trauma of Bruce’s parents being murdered. The main events and/or stressors that set Bruce on this path as said before was the trauma of the murder of his parents, the trauma of falling into a bat cave as an adolescent, and fleeing for his life from LOS after destroying the facility first, and defying his martial arts teacher and mentor Ra’s al Ghul. All of the presented traumas contribute to Bruce Wayne’s issues of PTSD, loneliness, mistrust of others, anger, and violent tendencies towards criminals.

Perpetuating Factors

The environment of Gotham city is a major contributing factor towards Bruce Wayne’s PTSD and violence towards criminals as he continues to live in and fight as vigilante in the same city that he experienced the majority of his traumas in. As a coping mechanism Bruce Wayne has now established the core belief of Gotham City being his responsibility to ‘protect’ from criminals and prevent the residents of Gotham from experiencing the same type of violence that was dealt to his parents. Another environmental factor that contributes to Bruce’s presenting problems is living in the same mansion that he grew up in while also setting up an encampment inside of the bat cave that he experienced trauma and developed a phobia of bats in as an adolescent. The mansion is an ongoing trigger to Bruce as he is reminded daily of not only the fond memories that were established with his parents in the house in the first half of his life but also being a reminder of the loneliness Bruce continues to feel to this day, as he experienced the second half of his life that he lived in the mansion with only his butler Alfred Pennyworth to care for him.

Protective Factors

The main strengths of Bruce Wayne is his resiliency, openness in asking for assistance from others, and finding a purpose inside and outside of vigilantism. Despite the many traumas Bruce has experienced, he has found purpose in his vigilantism despite its illegality. He also will contact the police commissioner James “Jim” Gordon and Wayne Enterprises employee Lucius Fox only when he concludes they can provide assistance in supporting his vigilantism. Bruce although will tend to listen to the advice of his butler Alfred Pennyworth and his childhood friend Rachel Dawes concerning his personal life such as when Rachel rebukes Bruce when he admits to her that he idealized about murdering Joe Chill before he was killed. There is room for improvement for Bruce to invite and listen to the consultation of others within his support system. As a positive coping mechanism by finding purpose through legal work, Bruce was able to reintegrate himself into his father’s company Wayne enterprises by purchasing the controlling stake mostly due to him being the sole heir of Thomas Wayne the founder of the company.
